ENGAGEMENT & PROPOSAL PHOTOGRAPHER IN MADRID

Film photography for couples, proposals, and elopements in the Spanish capital

Madrid is one of Spain's most cinematic cities for engagement sessions and elopements — and one of the most underrated. The grand boulevards of the Retiro, the ochre stone of the historic centre, the rooftop terraces above the city at golden hour: all of it photographs on analog film with a richness and warmth that feels completely at home in the Spanish light.

I'm Olya Kobruseva, a fine art film photographer based in Barcelona. I travel regularly to Madrid to photograph engagement sessions, surprise proposals, and elopements — and I know the city's best locations, light conditions, and hidden corners well.

My favourite locations for couples in Madrid include the Retiro Park at sunrise, when the lake and the Palacio de Cristal are still and quiet; the narrow streets of La Latina and Lavapiés, full of character and colour; the Jardines de Sabatini beside the Royal Palace, with its symmetrical hedges and city views; and the rooftop terraces of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and Hotel Riu, which offer some of the most extraordinary panoramic backdrops in the city.

Lan and Jason, the couple you see photographed here, crossed the Atlantic specifically to capture their love story in Spain on film. Their session in Madrid — with Lan dressed in a hand-embroidered flamenco-inspired gown she had collected piece by piece over years — is one of the most beautiful and personally meaningful sessions I have ever photographed. It is exactly the kind of story I live to tell.

If you are planning an engagement session, surprise proposal, or elopement in Madrid — and you want photographs that feel timeless rather than just well-lit — I would love to hear from you.

ENQUIRE ABOUT YOUR MADRID SESSION

Why shoot your Madrid engagement on analog film

Film photography changes the energy of a shoot. There's no screen to chimp after every frame, no rapid-fire bursts. Just presence — yours and mine. The result is a session that feels more like an afternoon together than a photo shoot, and images that carry the warmth and softness that only analog can give. I travel to Madrid regularly and accept a small number of engagement and elopement sessions there each year. If you're planning to elope, celebrate an anniversary, or simply want beautiful film portraits in one of Spain's most magnificent cities — I'd love to hear from you.

Best locations in Madrid for an engagement or elopement session

Madrid is endlessly photogenic, but some spots are simply made for analog film. Here are my favourite places to shoot couples in the city.

RETIRO PARK — The lung of Madrid and one of the most romantic settings in Spain. Early morning light filters through the trees in a way that feels almost cinematic, and the Estanque lake gives you open sky, reflections, and space. On film, the greens and golds here are extraordinary.

PALACIO REAL & THE SABATINI GARDENS — For couples who want grandeur. The scale of the Royal Palace creates a dramatic backdrop that looks like it belongs on the cover of a novel. The formal gardens alongside it are softer and more intimate.

GRAN VIA — If you want something more editorial and alive, the architecture of Gran Vía delivers an old-world European elegance that film was made for. Best shot at golden hour when the stone facades glow.

LAVAPIÉS & LA LATINA — For couples drawn to something less polished and more real. These are Madrid's most characterful neighbourhoods — tiled walls, narrow streets, laundry overhead. The kind of place where a flamenco dress makes complete sense.

Frequently asked questions — engagement & elopement photography in Madrid

Do you travel to Madrid regularly?

Yes — I visit Madrid each year and accept a small number of sessions there. If you're planning a shoot in the city, reach out early as dates go quickly.

Can you shoot our elopement in Madrid, not just an engagement session?

Absolutely. Madrid is a wonderful city to elope in — the paperwork is manageable for international couples and the city provides a natural backdrop that makes every moment feel meaningful. Get in touch and we can plan the whole day together.

Why shoot on film in Madrid specifically?

Madrid has extraordinary light — warm, golden, and generous for most of the year. Film responds to that light in a way digital simply doesn't replicate. The colours, the grain, the softness — it all works particularly beautifully in Spain.

How far in advance should I book?

I'd recommend reaching out at least 3–6 months before your date, especially for spring and autumn sessions which fill fastest.

What should we wear for a Madrid engagement session?

Think elegant and personal rather than matchy-matchy. Madrid has a natural flair — lean into it. Flowing dresses, tailored linen, rich textures all photograph beautifully on film. Avoid anything too bright or heavily patterned, as film renders saturated colours very intensely.

Do you help with location scouting and planning?

Yes — once you book, I send a full planning guide and we'll discuss locations together based on your style, the time of year, and what kind of images feel most like you.
